President Maduro dedicated himself establishing the framework for poverty reduction by recuperating sustainable and equitable economic growth, targeting spending on education and health, reducing the foreign debt, strengthening access to foreign markets (i.e. CAFTA), regaining investor confidence and strengthening the rule of law.
President Maduro made significant progress to reduce tax evasion and corruption in general, and complied with his main electoral promise to reduce crime.
President Maduro’s government undertook profound reforms in areas such as property rights for the poor, strengthening the independence of the Supreme Court, promoting transparency and accountability and strengthening democracy.
Mr. Maduro’s involvement in politics started in 1981, after which he was campaign director for the National Party’s candidate on two occasions, Chairman of the Party, and President of the Central Bank of Honduras and Chairperson of the Economic Cabinet from 1990 to 1994.
After his Presidency, Mr. Maduro has returned to occupy his position as Managing Director of Inversiones La Paz, a Honduran holding company with diversified business interests. He spends a significant proportion of his time supporting FEREMA, an NGO he founded in 1998 to improve the quality and equity of education in Honduras.
